A common question for those interested in using CBD is how much and how often. What may seem to be a simple query actually involves several factors. At NEK Hemp, we encourage our customers to start low and slowly increase the dosage. We recommend this approach not because too much CBD will harm you (like NSAIDs), but rather because it is wasteful to use more than you need. We want our customers to get the most bang for their buck!

Before going into the specifics of dosage, it is essential that we clarify that the suggestions below assume the use of full-spectrum CBD products that benefit from the entourage effect. CBD isolate is not nearly as effective and therefore proper dosage is far more difficult to pinpoint.

Here is a good rule for determining the correct dosage of full-spectrum CBD for you: “As with most substances, individuals with more body mass will require more CBD to experience its effects. With that being said, a good rule of thumb to determine your proper CBD dosage is to take 1–6MG of CBD for every 10 pounds of body weight based on the individual’s level of pain.”

All of our tinctures have droppers which indicate the MG of CBD in each ML so you can determine how to get your desired dosage. It is very important that you pay attention to how much you use so you are aware of what works best for you. These guidelines are just that: general suggestions that provide a starting point. Every person is unique in terms of their metabolism and sensitivity to pain. Some types of pain require a greater dosage and each person’s tolerance is different. As such, everyone needs to create their own dosage chart based on experience.

Another factor to keep in mind is the length of time before you will feel the effects of CBD and how long it will last. CBD products consumed orally take longer to get through your digestive system (up to 90 minutes). There is a significant loss of CBD in the process of digestion, so the dosage must be much higher to be effective. This is why we do not sell capsules as most of the CBD is not bioavailable.

CBD oil administered sublingually, such as our tinctures, has a much faster onset because it bypasses the digestive system and enters your bloodstream directly under the tongue and through the wall of your mouth. Users start to feel effects within 5 to 20 minutes. The effects are felt 4-6 hours.

CBD oils applied topically, such as lotions or balms, are best for treating targeted areas. The oil can be massaged directly onto the area to relieve pain or inflammation within minutes. Effects can last for several hours.

Folks use CBD differently, some take a dose every morning to ease the stiffness and aches of their body like a lubricant. Others use CBD when they feel like they need it due to anxiety or pain. Some take it before bed for a good night’s sleep. Everybody has their own method of using CBD.

In summary, we can offer advice on how much CBD to start with and what works for others. But every individual should learn how CBD works for their body. We all have unique endocannabinoid systems and thus need to use CBD differently.

If you are taking other medications, it is always advisable to ask your doctor if there is a risk of adverse reactions. Although it is quite rare for CBD to contraindicate, it is always best to be sure. Pregnant women and small children should also talk to a medical professional before taking CBD.
